BRUSHES WITH GREATNESS
Francoise Gilot
I met Francois Gilot at the Mann gallery in the New Orleans French Quarter. I was told by some friends who owned some of her work to come to the opening, where she would be meeting and greeting patrons. I thought it would be fun, and since I didn't know anything about her, I decided to watch a Charlie Rose interview with her. She was a fascinating woman. She was Picasso's mistress and had a child by him, and she went on to marry Jonas Salk, the inventor of the Polio vaccine! When I got to the gallery, my friends said go up and talk to. her. She'll sign her gallery brochure! I said OK and when I got to the front of the line I introduced myself and said I had seen her on Charlie Rose. She perked up, and we chatted about what an amazing interviewer he was. We just hit it off! She asked me what I did, and I told her I was making a documentary on /Clarence John Laughlin. Clarence John Laughlin!!! I have his book on my coffee table in Paris! I met him years ago when the French Quarter was much different. There is a book you should read, she said. It was about the French Quarter in the 1930's. She could remember the name and asked me for my phone number! At this point I had been chatting for. While her handlers looked shocked as she took down my phone number. I was shocked too! I realized I had monopolized her time and told her how wonderful it was to meet her. Then went over to my friends. "What were you talking about?" they asked with amazement. I said Charlie Rose and Laughlin, and the Quarter in the 30s. "She is so easy to talk to," I said, "like my grandmother or something! The opening was winding down, and Francoise and her entourage were leaving. I saw him and waved, and she stopped the group and came over. Sh asked her assistant, "What was that book about the Quarter in the 30's. Dixie Bohemia, she said, my brother wrote it! Francois said Ah Yes! and looked at me and said you must read it!!!
